Thierry J. Chaussalet

Thierry received a first degree in mathematics from the University of Franche-Comte (France), an MSc and a PhD from North Carolina State University (USA) in probability and stochastic processes. He is currently Professor in Operational Research at the University of Westminster, where he has been lecturing for over ten years. His research interests are in the use of IT and modelling techniques in health care management, and the development of tools that can aid healthcare decision-making. He was a co-founder, with Prof. Peter Millard, of the Health and Social Care Modelling Group (HSCMG) at the University of Westminster. He has published widely in the area of healthcare modelling and decision support, and was guest editor of the special issue "Modelling the Process of Care" of the journal Health Care Management Science (February 2001). He is currently secretary of the Operational Research Society (UK) Health and Social Services study group, and chair of the steering group of MASHnet, a healthcare modelling and simulation network, funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council.

Peter is a visiting professor to the University of Westminster. He qualified in Medicine in 1960. In 1968 he was the first consultant in geriatric medicine appointed to St. George's Hospital (London). Between 1993 and 1999 he was the Eleanor Peel Professor of Geriatric Medicine at St. George's Hospital Medical School (London), where his research interest in modelling and new methods of measuring activity in hospitals began. Between 1993 and 2002, he was a visiting professor to the Department of Mathematics at the University of Ulster. There he co-supervised several successful PhD's and published widely with Prof Sally McClean. In 1999, he was an expert advisor to the Council of Europe. Honours include President of the British Geriatrics Society, and President of the Geriatrics and Gerontology section of the Royal Society of Medicine. He is currently the editor of the Nosokinetics newsletter.




Sam Toffa

Sam specialises in the development and use of information systems in healthcare and research. He is a part-time lecturer in the School of Informatics at this University and also works as a software developer for the Health Protection Agency. He graduated with a degree in Applied Biological Sciences and began a clinical research career with Glaxo Group Research in the late 1980s. He is a Chartered Biologist and obtained a PhD in Surgical Sciences from the Royal Free and University College Medical School in 1992, focused on the biochemical mechanisms of damage to transplanted organs. Sam has also led research groups in the areas of vascular disease, neurological diseases and ovarian cancer and has published and presented internationally. Since the mid 1990s his work has focused on the innovative use of computers to address medical problems. Studies for his MSc in computing led him to develop a computer model of ovarian cancer, based on artificial life technologies. He was the programmer responsible for developing the risk management system for Europe's leading supplier of natural medicines and has run his own successful consultancy. Sam was a lead architect and database developer for the team that developed the Electronic Child Health Record System at the Royal Free Hospital (UCL), where he is also an honorary Research Fellow. He teaches Informatics, Database Development and Software Engineering from Foundation to MSc level and is a member of the British Computer Society.

Salma obtained a BEng in Mechanical Engineering from a tunisian engineering school (ENIT, Tunisia) (2002), an MSc in Industrial Engineering (2003) and a PhD in Operations Management in Healthcare Service (2008), both from the Ecole Centrale Paris (France). Her PhD research was concerned with the modelling and analysis of Operations Management related processes in Home Care organisations. She occupied a teaching assistant position at the Ecole Centrale Paris (2003-2006), and then at the university of Saint-Etienne (2006-2007). She is currently a research associate with the HSCMG at the University of Westminster.

Eren received a BSc in Computational Mathematics (2001), MSc in Decision Sciences (2004) and a PhD (2008) in Applied Statistics in health and social care services, all from the University of Westminster. Since 2005 he has been lecturing in undergraduate/ postgraduate mathematics and statistics. His PhD research was concerned with defining and developing a statistical framework for profiling hospitals based on patient readmissions. He is currently a research associate with the Health and Social Care Modelling Group (HSCMG) at the University of Westminster. His research interests are in the modelling of healthcare systems using stochastic processes, analysis of longitudinal data and statistical data mining on public health datasets. Other interests include medical statistics, patient flow modelling, statistical applications into sociology, psychology and education.

Haifeng Xie

Haifeng received a BSc in Applied Physics from the Shenzhen University (China), an MSc in Decision Science (with distinction) and a PhD (2004) in Operational Research in Healthcare Service, both from the University of Westminster. His PhD research was concerned with the modelling of placement, survival and costs of elderly people in long-term care. He is currently a research fellow with the Health and Social Care Modelling Group (HSCMG) at the University of Westminster. His general research interests lie in the modelling of healthcare systems using stochastic processes and statistical data mining on healthcare datasets.




Brijesh Patel

Brijesh successfully defended his PhD in 2007. His research works towards a methodology for evaluating performance management framework; it is focused on the use of a league table, Star Ratings, and the balanced scorecard in the UK healthcare for managing performance and change. He has a keen interest for the knowledge and data based decision making applications to strategic and organisational management.

He has been multidiscipline in academia and practice. His education ranges in Business, Computing and Decision Science; Business Graduate and MBA followed by master in operational research. He has received a diploma in Computer Applications from traditional computer education institute from India and a postgraduate diploma in international business and export-import documentations. He has been software development and marketing manager for a small-size IT company, and a freelance consultants for two successful IT-training institutes over two years for marketing and promotions.




Shola Adeyemi

Shola received a first degree in Statistics from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria where he wrote is report on “Time Series Analysis of Patronage of the University of Ibadan Guest Houses” and an MSc from the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife also in Nigeria where he was also a Lecturer in undergraduate mathematics and statistics. His MSc thesis was written in the area of Distribution theory and Applications titled “Properties and Applications of the generalized Gumbel distribution”. He worked briefly at the Statistical Science Group of the Los Alamos National Laboratory US as a Staff Research Assistant in 2004 developing novel statistical models for damage detection in civil engineering structures. Shola was a pre-doctoral student at the Katholieke Universiteit, Leuven Belgium , where he worked on Differential Item Functioning (DIF) detection in a Recruitment test, before coming to the University of Westminster as a PhD student in Health and Social Care Modelling. He completed in PhD theses on the topic “Patient Flow: Random Effects Modelling of Patient Pathways” He is a trained statistician with strong analytical skills and creativity from academic study combined with practical understanding of the theory, methods and applications of statistics. He has the expertise to turn data into meaningful information to help optimize situations in any kind of business. His research interests are in the use of generalized linear and nonlinear random effects models in investigating pattern of length of stay in health care institutions and general statistical modeling. He is willing to collaborate in any field of human endeavour. He is currently a Biomedical Statistician in the pharmaceutical sector providing statistical support into diagnostics and at all levels of drug development.

Anthony has a BEng in Mechanical Engineering from Brunel University, an MSc in Engineering Management from the University of Bristol and an MSc in Decision Sciences from the University of Westminster. He is currently a PhD student within the HSCMG. In addition, Anthony is also a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) Associate working with an industrial partner, healthcare strategist RKW Limited, to develop computer simulation toolkits for the health sector. Prior to healthcare modeling, Anthony's background was in Process and Quality Engineering.

Md. Asaduzzaman obtained a B.Sc. and an M.Sc. in Applied Statistics both from Institute of Statistical Research and Training (ISRT), University of Dhaka, Bangladesh. After receiving M.Sc. he joined at ISRT as a Lecturer where he was involved in undergraduate teaching in statistics and mathematics for four years. Asad received an M.Sc. in Bioinformatics in 2007 from Chalmers University of Technology, Goteborg, Sweden. Now he is working as a Ph.D. student at Health and Social Care Modelling Group (HSCMG) in University of Westminster. His research concentrates on the capacity planning of neonatal heath care system in the UK.

Erich received a first degree in Mathematics and Statistics from the University of Cape Town (South Africa), followed by an honours degree in Chemical Engineering. He received his MSc in Decision Science (with distinction) at the University of Westminster, where he is currently doing research for his PhD. His research interests are in the use of IT and modelling techniques in health care management, and general healthcare decision-making. Erich is full-time employed and had various senior posts ICT / Management Consultant in major international consultancies. He is currently a CTO for BT Global Services.

Philip obtained a BA (Econ) in Economics in 2008 from the University of Manchester, England, and completed his MSc in Operational Research & Management Science at LUMS (Lancaster University Management School) in 2009.  As part of his MSc he spent three months as an operational research analyst at the NHS Derbyshire County Primary Care Trust, where he constructed a planning model to help forecast the future burden of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. In  Autumn 2009 he submitted his MSc dissertation on the challenges of building COPD strategic planning models to model long term future demand.  At present he is undertaking a PhD at the University of Westminster and works part time for the for the NHS London Procurement Program on a pan-London demand forecasting model.  His research interests include the application of machine learning algorithms to strategic health care planning.

Muhammad Saiful Islam obtained a B.Sc. and an M.Sc. in Applied Statistics both from Institute of Statistical Research and Training (ISRT), University of Dhaka , Bangladesh . After receiving M.Sc. he joined at International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research Bangladesh (ICDDR'B) as a Senior Research Assistant for about one year. His M.Sc. thesis was based on the area of Ranked Set Sampling (Simple Linear Regresson Analysis with Ranked Set Sample Data). Now he is working as a Ph.D. student at Health and Social Care Modelling Group (HSCMG) in University of Westminster , UK . His research concentrates on the modelling impact of climate change on care services for the elderly population.


Sarah Dalton

Sarah received BA (Medical Sciences) in 1988 and MB BChir in 1991 from Cambridge University and MD from Manchester University in 1999.  She was Clinical Research Fellow in Atopic Eczema at the University of Manchester in 1995-7 and is now working as an NHS hospital consultant at Colchester General Hospital.  She is a Member of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland and a Fellow of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health. She is currently Chair of the Essex Neonatal Clinical Development Group and a PhD candidate with the Health and Social Care Modelling Group at the University of Westminster, looking at neonatal capacity.
