ACQUIRING THE SKILLS EMPLOYERS WANT
Increase your Self Awareness
It is never too soon to start thinking about your future. Even in your
first year at University, you can be developing useful skills and interests.
These days, simple possession of a degree is not
the sole pre-requisite for a good graduate job.
Students often underestimate their achievements and part-time work experience,
thinking they are of little interest to a prospective employer, or that
the skills learnt and developed will not be applicable to the workplace.
Being aware of your skills, interests and values will help
you:
- Know what appropriate opportunities exist
- Inform a potential employer about your suitability - whether for a
job, work placement or work experience. A realistic self-assessment
will enable you to match your skills and achievements with the requirements
of an employer more effectively in a CV,
Application Form and at Interview
- Relate them to the demands of a working life
- Make and implement decisions throughout life for effective career
management.
WHAT CAN YOU DO ABOUT INCREASING YOUR SELF AWARENESS?
- Use Prospects PLANNER - a computer guidance package
- Attend Workshops - the Careers Service
runs workshops that include sessions on self awareness. Ask your course
leader if they have organised any for you. Make sure you don't miss
out on them.
- Elect to study Career Development Modules - ask your course leader
if there is one available for your course.
- Other Resources (videos, books, websites).
