Dr Christos Vasilakis

Senior Lecturer until July 2007

Short bio

In my first year in the UK, I obtained my MSc in Decision Sciences with distinction from University of Westminster, London (1998). For my MSc project I was sent to the geriatric department of St. George’s Hospital Medical School, University of London, where under the supervision of Prof Peter Millard. I  started working in health care systems and more specifically, modeling the flow of patients through hospital departments. The main theme of my PhD thesis (under the supervision of Dr Elia El-Darzi and Prof Peter Millard) is the interaction of data modeling techniques (mainly data warehousing and OLAP) and OR/MS techniques (mainly discrete event simulation) in modeling hospital bed occupancy and length of stay (read the abstract of my thesis). Previously, I had spent 4 years working for Lavisoft Information Systems S.A., an IT company based in Athens, Greece, as an IT developer. I am appointed a senior lecturer in database systems at Harrow School of Computer Science, University of Westminster. I recently completed my post-doctoral training at the Department of Health Care and Epidemiology, University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada under the supervision of Drs Boris Sobolev and Adrian Levy where I was partially supported by a Michael Smith Foundation fellowship.

Current research projects

Developing capacity for evaluating proposed policies in the care for older patients through computer simulations (with Dr Chooi Lee, Kingston Hospital).

This study is partially funded by a Strategic Promotion of Ageing Research Capacity award (SPARC, an EPSRC/BBSRC initiative).

Developing a participative user tool to aid the conceptual development of simulation models in healthcare (with Dr Kathy Kotiadis, Warwick Business School).

This study is funded by an EPSRC grant (EP/E045871/1).
